Hunting for Rutting Bucks

Hunting and scouting for whitetail deer this week has been great.

One week of shotgun hunting in southern Ontario and this week in central Ontario I have had an awesome time hunting whitetail during the fall rut.

The MNR’s multiple tag options has kept me busy in pursuit of Ontario’s deer during the controlled shotgun hunt. Pre- season preparation planting a Backyard Wildlife Food Plot and building a blind enabled me to take two bucks on same day from my blind party hunting.

A nice 6-pointer at 7am was cruising the edge of this corn field 13 yards east of my blind Dropped it in it’s tracks with my Browning O/U 12 gauge.

That afternoon a button buck decided an early afternoon stop in the Sweet Success food plot would be a good idea. Well it was for me as well as the owner of the property. He wanted a small deer to fill his tag. The farmer was on watch about 200 yards away when he heard my shotgun.

The next day hunting a farm north of this I watched a 9-point buck running the north field edge. Minutes later the buck reappeared with two does and three fawn on the far side of the field. They continued to run circles coming closer and closer to my location on the south side of the field. My Nikon 550 rangefinder showed 67 yards. One shot from my Browning sealed the deal on my third buck in two days.

The next morning I had the big buck of the farm answer my antler rattling with consecutive snorts and wheezes, Boy was he showing his dominance. Thick cover and a wavering breeze helped him survive the day. I shall have to get back there with my bow later in November or December.

Tomorrow I try to fill my central Ontario deer tag in the Kawarthas, hopefully some cooler weather will get the deer mobile.
