Ontario’s moose tag draw system needs your help

Members of the public are invited to attend one of the Ministry of Natural Resources’ open houses to comment on Ontario’s moose tag draw system. The draw allocates moose tags to resident hunters. It is designed to give the greatest number of hunters an opportunity to hunt or share an adult moose while maintaining sustainable moose populations. Through the open house, the Ontario government is encouraging people to discuss how the draw system can be improved. Biologists will be on hand to lead discussions and answer questions.

Each open house in Southwestern Ontario will take place from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. with presentations starting at 7:00 p.m. followed by questions.

Windsor, Monday, March 23, Ciociaro Club of Windsor, Inc – Salon DE, 3745 North Talbot Road, Oldcastle.

London, Tuesday, March 24, Best Western Stoneridge Inn – Town and Country Ballroom, 6675 Burtwistle Lane, London.

Hamilton, Wednesday, March 25, Valley Park Arena and Recreation Centre – Gymnasium, 970 Paramount Dr, Stoney Creek.

Owen Sound, Thursday, March 26, Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre – Sound Room, 1900 3rd Avenue East, Owen Sound.

In addition to the open houses throughout the province, visitors to the Toronto Sportsmen’s Show from Wednesday, March 18, to Sunday, March 22, can obtain information from the MNR booth at #4901 in the Heritage Court and take part in the presentations and questions from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. daily in the Hunting Hall. (Toronto Sportsmen’s Show, Direct Energy Centre, Exhibition Place, 100 Princess Boulevard, Toronto)

The ministry launched a review of the program in 2008 to ensure Ontario’s moose continue to be managed in a responsible and sustainable way.

Since 1983, Ontario’s selective-harvest system has increased the moose population to about 109,000 from about 80,000. Viewing and hunting moose generates about $100 million in economic activity within Ontario each year.

For more information, or to find an open house near you, visit the moose review website at ontario.ca/moosereview, contact your local Ministry of Natural Resources office, or view the information notice posted on the Environmental Registry by going to ontario.ca/environmentalregistry and entering Registry Number 010-5965.

To share your ideas, go to an open house in your community and fill out a questionnaire, visit a ServiceOntario location, or call the Ministry of Natural Resources at 1-800-667-1940.
