The Lake Simcoe Fisheries Stakeholder Committee is pleased to announce two important initiatives – The Lake Simcoe Angler Diary Program and the production of a poster and wallet cards to educate anglers to identify the difference between whitefish and lake herring (cisco).
 Lake Simcoe is the most intensively fished inland lake in the province. As such, the Committee would like to actively engage anglers in collecting valuable information on the fisheries resources of the lake through the new Lake Simcoe Angler Diary Program.Â
In partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR), the Committee will distribute, collect and report results from the diary program to improve our management of this valuable resource. Frequent Lake Simcoe anglers who will diligently record their fishing trip results in the diary can obtain a copy from their local tackle shops around the Lake Simcoe watershed or by calling 905-713-7400.
The diary is printed on waterproof paper; contains instructions; and comes complete with tape measure and postage paid return envelope. Â The Committee is also pleased to initiate their first angler awareness program educating anglers how to identify cisco from whitefish.Â
With recent increases in cisco catches around Lake Simcoe, the Committee wanted to insure that anglers know how to tell the difference as the cisco fishery on Lake Simcoe was closed in 2001 for conservation reasons. Â
The Lake Simcoe Fisheries Stakeholder Committee was established by the MNR in June 2007 and includes representatives from well known stakeholder organizations ranging from individual ice hut operators to local environmental organizations. The Committee provides advice and recommendations to the Midhurst and Aurora District managers of the MNR on the management of the fisheries resources of Lake Simcoe, Lake Couchiching and their watersheds. The Committee will also take an active role in promoting fisheries stewardship within the watershed to improve the health of its fish community.Â
