Duck Hunter Busted Using Bait

MNR Media Release – Migratory Birds and Bait

A Warsaw resident has been fined $1,500 for offences related to illegal hunting practices.

Kenneth R. Hutchison pleaded guilty and was fined $1,000 for hunting waterfowl within 400 metres of bait and $500 for depositing bait during a prohibited period.

In addition to the fines, he is banned from holding a migratory game bird hunting permit for one year.

The court heard that on September 25, 2010, conservation officers checked Hutchison at the Indian River, in Douro-Dummer Township, Peterborough County. An inspection of the area close to the hunting blind revealed it had been baited with corn.

Justice of the Peace Carl Young heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice,

Peterborough, on September 8, 2011.

It is illegal to hunt waterfowl within 400 metres of where bait has been deposited. In addition, hunters may not deposit bait within 14 days of the open season for waterfowl in an area where they intend to hunt.
