Land Stewardship Workshop

The Manitoulin Area Stewardship Council (MASC) invites the public to attend a Land Stewardship Workshop.

The Manitoulin Area Stewardship Council (MASC) is a community volunteer based organization that promotes sound land use stewardship in the Manitoulin & North Shore area. MASC and their stewardship partners are sponsoring a workshop to provide landowners with information on how to benefit from caring for their lands and waters and link them to resources that will help them out. The public and related service providers are invited to participate and showcase their services and there is no charge for attendance or related displays.

The workshop will be held at the Mindemoya Community Center in Mindemoya on Saturday, April 17th, 2010 beginning at 9:00 AM ending at about 4:00 PM.

Upstairs Hall: PRESENTATIONS:

Practical advise on how to manage private woodlands for timber production and non-timber products such as wildlife habitat etc. Speaker: Marc Hebert, Professor of Forestry at College Boreal in Sudbury, a Managed Forest Tax Incentive Program (MFTIP) advisor and approver.

Learn how to establish and manage wildlife food plots, create specialized wildlife habitats and use mineral supplements.  Also learn about the Quality Deer Management Association’s (QDMA) deer management philosophy and management techniques. Speaker: Steve Elmy of RackStacker & Backyard Wildlife Products Ltd of Roslin a very knowledgeable presenter who recently gave these presentations at the 2010 Toronto Sportmans Show and at the BASS Pro Shop in Vaughn.

Learn how to take practical action to protect rural homes, cottages and adjacent natural resources from the risk of wildfires. Every year early spring hay field and household grass/brush fires burn down area buildings and residences. Practical tips to prevent fire from negatively impacting you. Speaker: Irwin Bennett, of MNR Fire Operations in Sudbury

Establishing and managing fruit trees hardy to this area; there are literally thousands of abandoned fruit trees across this area that if managed properly can be brought into production as bountiful wildlife / human food sources. An outside on-site fruit tree pruning demonstration will be done as well. Speaker: Ron Lewis a hardy fruit tree and pruning specialist and supplier from Sudbury

n  Jean Narozanski a locally well known local speaker and very knowledgeable gardener will present on her experiences and tips for establishing bountiful flower and vegetable gardens by working with nature and all done without the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides
